
Bay Area violinist Sarah Wood, D.M.A., pursues a career as a frequent recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral leader. She performs with the Circadian String Quartet, as Assistant Principal Second of the Berkeley Symphony, and acting Assistant Concertmaster of the California Symphony. As a freelancer, she performs with the San Francisco Symphony as well as other orchestras in the area. In past years, Sarah has soloed with Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra, the Villa Sinfonia, Panache & Icicle Creek Chamber Orchestras. Internationally, she has performed in the Netherlands, in Tunisia as a musical ambassador from Cultures in Harmony, and in Chile on Easter Island.
A dedicated educator, Sarah maintains a vibrant private studio and is on faculty at the Crowden Music School. She has taught violin, viola & chamber music for nearly 20 years, is certified through Book 8 in the Suzuki Method, and has also intensively studied the pedagogies of Paul Rolland and Kato Havas. From 2009-2012, she served as Lina Bahn’s Teaching Assistant at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is currently on faculty at the Zephyr Point Chamber Music Retreat, and has also coached chamber music at PACO Chamber Music Camp, the Sacramento Chamber Music Workshop, and through the Berkeley Youth Orchestra.
Sarah completed her doctorate in violin performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she helped design ergonomic violin equipment with Violinist in Balance at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. She has since led workshops and demonstrations on the ergonomics of chin rests, most notably at the 2013 European String Teacher's Association International Conference in Oxford, England. She also holds a Bachelor's and Master's from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she was a student of Paul Kantor and William Preucil. Other teachers include Zaven Melikian, Andrés Cárdenes, Lis Perry, Lina Bahn, Karoly Schranz, and Robin Sharp.
Sarah is currently training in San Francisco to become an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher.
